The game throws you into a post-apocalyptic world after an asteroid smashes into Earth causing world-wide extinction, leaving only those that were offered underground protection or those that survived through radiation induced mutation.
Everything about the game is fluid, it just feels good to do everything. It has just enough RPG elements to please heavy RPG fans and just enough breakneck action to please the hardcore FPS fans, not to mentioned enough exploration and loot collecting to please the few of us with medication worthy OCDs.
The racing and driving around in general is not half-arsed in the slightest. I'd say it even beat Borderlands and felt more like how you'd expect the perfect Mad Max game to feel. Now that a Mad Max game has come out, you can see where they got their inspiration from in terms of game design, as Rage always felt like the perfect Mad Max-esque game to me.
Despite how much love I have for Rage, is does has a negative... The ending, no spoilers but once you're done, you cannot continue to free-roam, the last save puts you right before the last mission and it put a horribly sour taste against what was up to that point, a flawless experience. There is something that resolves this though, and that's The Scorchers DLC which allows you to play past the last mission and continue to free-roam there after to complete side missions or find collectibles. This DLC isn't sold on Opium Pulses at time of writing but can be picked up on Steam for cheap.
TL;DR - This is a solid game with beautiful graphics, all the best bits from games like Borderlands and Fallout and an engaging storyline. If you like Mad Max, you'll like this game more. Loses half a star as only The Scorchers DLC fixes the lack of free-roam after base completion.
