I was always an Unreal Tournament fan when I was a kid (odd because I never played the Unreal games but was in love with the Quake titles), content as I was with my choice I never really gave Quake III much of a chance, most likely as I felt the skill ceiling was much higher in that game and I did not have the time nor patience to perfect the art.
Having since grown up and watched 90s twitchy FPS online shooters basically vanish from existence, it was nice to hear that games like Unreal Tournament and Quake Champions are finally making a return. Now I've tried both and despite their early access status, Quake Champions is light years ahead in terms of polish and refinement - the game could probably release as is now and be a worthy revival of the genre. However CoD, Halo and battle royale games have essentially killed off any chance of these games being at the forefront of the competitive multiplayer scene, which is a shame considering how much more skill is involved to become any good in them.
Quake Champions keeps just enough of the original formula and brings just enough modern design and functionality to have it feel like a true successor to Quake III / Quake Live. I urge any of you that were or are into any old school arena shooters of any kind to give Quake Champions a try, at the very least it's the last decent game to hold the Quake name since 1999.
