Gods Against Machines Review

Developed and Published - Silver Eye Studios

Your world is under attack by a ruthless race of machines, and you are its only hope.

Cast epic spells, summon minions or buildings, and destroy the enemy before they conquer your home in this roguelite strategy game!

Enter a world where the machines have taken over after mankind, a world where the machines try and corrupt the planet with their factories and life-sucking plants.

Mother Nature is pissed and wants to fight back. You are recruited as a newborn god with the powers of the elements at your grasp.

Will you be the one to answer Mother Nature's plead for help? Or will you let the corruption consume her?

Gameplay

With a small tutorial to show you the main ropes of using skills, mana pools and how to get more mana, it's easy to see that this game is very chill in the God-hand style of gameplay.

It will also show you how to deal with enemies and your path to victory.

With a simple click of the mouse button, and some general map awareness the game lives up to a rogue-lite adventure.

Before beginning, you are given 4 choices for a main element path, Azzinnoth for Fire, Zafari for Wind, Urus for Earth and Nadea for Water. The 5th Element is Gaia, but this one acts as a permanent element for mana, and will persistent throughout multiple playthroughs.

You must also pick from 1 of any of the random selection skills to learn, choose wisely, as when you face the main game you may be penalised for a disadvantage.

Since I chose Nadea, I could use water to my advantage, you may also learn other nature skills like Fire or Earth, so it's a bonus.

After you successfully annihilate the enemy's resource supply, you will be rewarded with Power shards, Gaia shards and new skills to learn and upgrade.

To successfully finish a stage, you must destroy the resources but constantly attack plants and buildings, destroying enemy units does nothing, but make sure not to become overwhelmed as you may still lose your mana crystals.

The game provides a well-balanced challenge, and even if things become difficult, Gaia will try to help you as much as possible.

My biggest nitpick for the game is that Mana depletes way too quickly, so manage your mana as much as possible.

After depleting the enemy resources, you'll come face to face with that level base commander, they get harder and harder, so multiple replays are needed to keep levelling up Gaia and other skills.

Levelling up is done using Power shards which you collect during and after the match. Though be careful how you use them, each level up, doubles the amount needed for the next level.

Gaia seeds are well... Used to level up Gaia's abilities.

Abilities gained per run are the ones that can be levelled up, so new abilities that you pick up will also need to be levelled up.

Final Thoughts

I had thoughts that it would be similar to how Command and Conquer is but sadly mistaken as you simply just shoot your left click with a rapid respawning city appearing in front of your eyes.

Taking down the resource meter is a lot easier said than done, as it becomes much harder in later areas.

The graphics and sounds are of a high standard, and the Gameplay loop and Core mechanics have replay values. I'm not sure if the game has randomly generated levels or not, but it's always worth checking out something different.

This game is different, but for some, it could be boring, as you simply just left-click and use skills with a quick draining mana pool.

It's not a bad game to play... But it's not something that fully captivates my curiosity to explore nor does it satiate my attention.

Rating

This 3 rating that I gave comes from the fact that it's fun for the first time around until you understand that you aren't doing anything at this point and click.

Sure, the game is different than what you would expect from the videos on its Steam page, but in truth, that's all it is. It's just different.
