GUNHEAD Review

Developer and PublisherAlienTrap

Gunhead is a fast-paced strategic roguelike FPS where you take the role of a pirate mech with a gun for a head, looting derelict spaceships filled with monstrous drones made out of bone and steel.

Sequel to the 2d roguelite Cryptark.

Unrelated to the My Hero Academia hero and the sequel to the June 2017 2D title, Cryptark, comes GUNHEAD. This 3D space, Sci-Fi game gives you the guns, it gives you the procedural base raider generation and best of all it provides that much-needed itch to bring the smack down upon alien spaceship's brains.

If Meet Your Maker and MOTHERGUNSHIP came together and made a couple of pixel babies, GUNHEAD would be that outcome.

Yes, it is all it is cracked up to be, but it does come with a disadvantage, lets walk through the blue forcefields and find it out, in an upcoming section.

Gameplay

Upon starting a new game, I would HIGHLY advise you to check your settings. When loading into the game, my sensitivity was set to the highest value and made me spin for at least a 1000-degree turn.

It's what would put Tony Hawk's 720 spin to shame, that's for sure.

So, you just got past the preview of being hired to collect Xenotechnology, afterwards, you come to face the flight path terminal, from here you can pick 1 of the 3 missions you would like to attempt to defeat, and then you are given a short tutorial when you enter the mech.

The tutorial is great as it explains moving around and shooting 4 different weapons, you can find other weapons, useful passive perks and equipment in your exploration throughout various ships. You may also visit the License shop to purchase them as well.

You can also purchase new mechs on each new run after dying, so be prepared to die... A lot...

You've entered the Mech, you've mastered the basics of moving forward, now what do you do? You go crazy inside the base! Go out into the open space and find those blue doors, the yellow doors are locked with keys that you can find inside the base, or destroy the door mechanism station.

Before you do though, I would recommend that you view your map, and plan your entrance and your route. Some areas are locked behind an alarm system, whilst others are protected behind a shield, you must find and destroy these to progress.

Don't go completely ham, as there are some optional secondary missions if you are looking for that little extra juicy cash, you may find simply destroying the shield generator and the brain the best course of action for maximum completion rewards. Simply put, keep a note on those missions.

Gaining credits for potential weapons, mechs and armour is easy enough, you can easily accumulate enough to buy at least 2 mechs before you reach mission 6 by following the optional missions.

The main objective of the game is to destroy the brain nexus, and when you advance enough, to destroy one of the boss mechs every 5 or so main bases. I found one base to have 2 brains inside... It was annoying and hard, even though I set the difficulty to Easy.

There are 4 options of difficulty. Easy, Medium, Hard and Nightmare. Medium is what you would call the Normal difficulty, and Easy would be the Story based, but don't let the game fool you into believing that. Easy feels like Medium and so on.

Trying to beat all 6 levels wasn't an "Easy" feat... But at least you can restart from the beginning to pick up the trophies that you didn't collect on your way, the replayability is of a good quality.

In terms of Graphical quality, I would absolutely say that this is on par with MOTHERGUNSHIP, and the random procedural map generation is excellent, no base is ever the same, not even the first basic one after the tutorial.

Final Thoughts

Here it is, the disadvantage!

There was only 1 component of the game that I can truthfully say that I disliked, when firing the second weapon binded to the right mouse click, it slows down the mouse movement SO MUCH that it is impossible to avoid being hit by the AI, especially the ones that like ram you. I swear it's impossible to believe that I got Aimbot on like that.

Minus that the game runs smooth, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing, I may even attempt to score the achievements, there are only about 20 of them, and most are story-based like destroying a certain boss, or unlocking all of a certain mech.

Rating

I would rate this a 4

The reason is only because of the massive slowdown of using the second weapon skill slot. This is worth the 5, I couldn't find settings that relate to it, so I thought it could only be a game mechanic.
