Deadly Rain Review
Developed and published; FireRing Studio.
FireRing Studio is a Brazilian indie game studio that develops unique survival horror games for PC and consoles.
Deadly Rain is a survival horror FPS game that puts you in a terrifying fight for survival against hordes of scary mutants in a rainy, abandoned village.
Find and manage resources to stay alive in the worst and most unexpected situations.
Don't listen to what the description of the game says, it's almost as plain as day.
Deadly Rain is something that you would pick off the $2 shelf from Blockbuster or some other entertainment store.
Here in Deadly Rain, you experience constant rain, dull vision and an incredibly sloppy movement with a weird weapon sway that feels much worse than what CoD is.
There is a major similarity to how Call of Duty: Zombies is played, you find weapons lying around, find your ammo, and open up doors to explore other sections of the map.
If you feel that type of player is you, then feel free to play it yourself, but be warned it's not at all as it cracked up to be.
Gameplay
Oh boy, what can I even say... I think we should start with general gameplay before we talk about the more pressing issues the game has.
Deadly Rain has a Silent Hill/CoD Zombies vibe, both of these mixed into one game.
You start in a small town, and after a few rounds have passed a glowing white key may spawn, I only ever found 3 of these keys in one game, and I made it to round 26 before dying.
They don't spawn every round so it's worth bunkering down somewhere and passing the time.
Unlike Zombies in Call of Duty, there are no wall-buys, there is no pack-a-punch or any additional perks that you can buy to help during play, however, there are random loot drops located around that you collect like; Grenades, injection shots, ammo and most importantly, a variety of 17 different weapons that cycle depending on what areas of the map you open.
(Forgot to turn the SFX back on, you can hear the obnoxious sounds around the middle section of the video)
The sound effects are repetitive and there is one sound that is so obnoxious to my ears that I disabled SFX completely, it's like a constant screeching sound, I don't know if that's from the zombies or some kind of ambience sound but it is annoying as heck.
As mentioned you can find weapons lying around. These can be anything from pistols, marksman rifles, melee weapons and shotguns. You can even bag yourself an achievement for finding all 17 weapons, but you have to pick it up for it to count. I found that killing a single mutant made sure that I used it.
As for visual effects, I can't say much. The game was rather dark and I had to enhance the images taken from the game with a brightness increase, though you do have a flashlight and some light sources it still feels like it's too dark. There are no graphic settings to speak of, nor could I change what key bindings I could use... Who uses 3 for grenades and 4 for healing?
As for mutant spawns, they are just ridiculous. I was camping on top of a building where only 3 exits and one entrance were, and somehow a mutant just appeared behind me like magic, I did find a sweet spot on that roof where I couldn't be hit from behind, but that was a right annoyance for me.
If that wasn’t all, while mutants can be slow, they will still hit you because guess what? You’re even slower than them and sprinting is limited.
Don't even get me started on animations. The walking animation is incredibly slow, and the animation to pick up items is sometimes delayed or doesn't happen. Reloading while sprinting is non-existent, which is the only reason I got killed. You can't even switch weapons until you have fully reloaded.
You can only hold up to 2 weapons though. Melee or pistols for slot 1, or everything else for slot 2, my favourite combo was the Revolver and MP5.
Final thoughts
I expected more from this game, like an action-packed adventure, but instead, I got a 2nd copy of Zombies mode. The movement controls feel awkward and key bindings feel out of place, along with the constant ear-aching sound of obnoxious screeching, I think this game could use some serious tweaks.
From my experience of playing the game, I could only find 3 keys in different areas of the map. After unlocking your 3rd door, they just don't appear anymore. There are around 6 unlockable areas, The church, residential buildings, industrial facility and the campsite, along with 2 cabins that can be unlocked.
The fog is incredibly thick, and the lighting needs a tad boost made to it.
Allowing the player to also hold to aim rather than click to aim would also be highly appreciated, I hated that the most I think.
The game is repetitive, with a high need to look for ammo after every 2 rounds. The constant back and forward between all the areas while doing the normal CoD strategy of leaving one last mutant alive while you do so is probably one of its better-unintended features.
Rating
I would rate this game
2/5
