About the game
Developed and published by indie studio Spearhead Games, the fantasy-adventure game Omensight has been deemed the spiritual successor of their hit game Stories: The Path of Destinies. For this game, you play in the same broad universe as Stories, only from a complete new perspective filled with mystery.
Without giving too much of the story away, in Omensight you play as the Harbinger, a mysterious, glowing warrior who appears whenever there is a crisis. Currently, the world is divided by an ongoing, raging war. If that wasn't enough, during nighttime you get to witness the end of the world at the hands of a sinister force known as Voden. It is up to you to relive this day in order to find clues and a possible way to alter what happened. Each choice you make will either aid you in uncovering the mysteries of how the apocalypse came to be or will doom the land of Urralia even more.
Gameplay
The story of the game is very rich and there are many cinematics integrated into the gameplay along with combat and some platform mechanics. The battle style reminds me of early Prince of Persia or Devil May Cry games. Like most hack-and-slash combat, you have light, medium and heavy attacks mixed in with some pretty epic special skills.
After each run, you end up in the same place, a sanctuary where you talk to the Witch, level up and upgrade your skills. She will try her best to guide you in your task to save Urralia from impending destruction. This is also where you choose how you'll relive the final day. Each soul the Harbinger is able to save, turns into a totem that can be used to revisit the daily happening's from that particular character's point of view.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Beautiful visuals and cutscenes. Without an inch of doubt, it's clearly seen that Spearhead Games paid a lot of attention to the character designs, animations and environment in order to dazzle us.
- Amazing narration. If you love a good story that slowly envelopes you in it's magic, you're in for a treat. Both the voices and the story itself are captivating and will keep you craving for more.
- Smooth combat. The combat style is basically attack, dodge, counterattack, and repeat yet this is done in a very subtle way, with clear attacks and dodges. If you're one to charge forward and kill the enemies before they even have a chance to attack you, the combat will still feel smooth and the button response time is instant.
- Skip button. If you feel tired of listening to the story or the dialogues, you have the option to skip them. However, keep in mind that if you skip, you may miss significant information.
- Difficulty. The game does a great job in helping the player feel comfortable. You are able to customize your difficulty for combat and for investigations.
Cons:
- Loading times. Loading takes a while so if you're a desperate player, you might need to boost your Patience skill for this one.
- Camera angles. The camera while able to move a small bit, it's basically fixed which sucks during certain fights or while platforming.
- Repetitiveness. You keep repeating the same day until you are able to figure out the what happened and how to save Urralia, which at moments may feel repetitive. The same happens in combat. Once you get the basic routine down, most fights could feel redundant.
Final Thoughts
I can honestly say, I was pleasantly surprised by what Omensight had to offer. The game clearly reminded me of the movie, Happy Death Day, since it has the same perspective of continuing to relive the last day in order to get answers on what transpired and how to survive. I'm a sucker for mystery and investigation, so being able to see what was going on from each character's unique point of view felt deeply rewarding to me.
On more general aspects, playing with a controller is definitely recommended to land better hits and combos. I played on the computer, tried to play using mouse/keyboard combo but failed miserably, ended up using a controller and was able to make progress faster and die less. As I've previously stated, the game allows you to choose your difficulty whether you want to concentrate on the story and make combat and investigating easier or go hardcore and get a kick out of both. While changing difficulty doesn't really affect gameplay, just remember that every decision you make on each of your runs, matters in the end. The game takes anywhere from 8 to 12 hours, depending on how you investigate.
Rating:
(On a scale of 1-5, being 5 the absolute best)
My rating for Omensight is 4 happy kitties. The game is enticing and kept me wanting to continue going back for more. The art and music are also sublime. I fell in love with most of the game and am pretty sure this will be on my top favorite games for this year. My only critique would be the repetitiveness of the fights, other than that, this game is a hidden gem that I wish more players are able to play and experience.
