Morbid: The Seven Acolytes Review
img

Morbid is a VERY beautiful game, from everything static like trees or houses to moving assets like enemies and blood explosions. Trees, branches and bushes will sometimes make it confusing and you will not be able to see if you can go through a path or if there’s something blocking the way. Other than that, I loved the overall look and feel of the game. The sound of pots breaking when I hit them reminded me of some older games , almost like the sound asset comes from another game, but I will consider this as a coincidence. The audio and music fit perfectly with the theme and it’s a big part of the overall beauty of the game.

Gameplay-wise, I had a lot of fun smashing things, killing enemies, and learning how to not get hit by the wide array of monsters. At its core, Morbid is pretty simple: you need to learn about each of the beasts so you can effectively get past them without dying. During my own playthrough, I tried to switch weapons when I discovered new ones, but I kept going back to my favorite one because I had found a way to kill some enemies with my charged hit. It was easier for me to use that weapon than learn how to fight with another one, as long as there were no new types of monsters on my path! When I encoutered my first Acolyte, I quickly realized that I needed to review my strategy...

And that’s where I started to feel a bit less excited by the game... maybe it’s not my type. I’m 100% certain there are gamers out there who are craving for games like Morbid. I did not feel any satisfaction from beating the Acolyte because I only needed to switch weapons and find the right one, then it was beatable without losing any life. Again, I must insist I am not the typical player targeted by this game... I feel like this game is more of a puzzler and I prefer games that require a different set of skills... Once you find out what works, you’re done.

I liked the complexity of items and the inventory: you can “pimp” your weapons with runes, you can use 2 different setups and quickly switch between them. When you open your inventory, it doesn’t pause the game so you should always enter any combat well-prepared, with the right items set at your fingertips (gamepad arrows). I would have wanted the inventory to pause my game, but I think it goes well with the game’s other gameplay choices, which make the game a difficult one if you’re not methodic.

I tested Morbid with an Xbox One controller and KB+mouse setup and I liked both, they performed well and without any problem. The keyboard can be remapped but there’s no way in-game to rebind your controller buttons (there's always Steam's own controller setup), which was not a problem for me since the default configuration worked flawlessly.

Here are a couple of other cons:
- sloppy hitboxes
- stealth mechanic works even when directly in front of an enemy (should only work when hidden in bushes IMO)
- you can only hit left or right, trying to hit downwards or upwards will result in the same horizontal attack as when you’re going left or right (still hitting the monsters up or down from your character)

I recommend this game to fans of the genre, but maybe wait for a sale because there are other options out there that look almost as good and are at least as much fun!
