It could be said that 2019 won't be the year of high-budget RPG projects. During it, we are unlikely to play Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield, and we should not expect either Dragon Age 4 or The Elder Scrolls 6. However, RPG games in 2019 have one consoling fact - most of them take place in new worlds, which in translation means that we expect a bit of originality and some fresh ideas from them. Here are the titles in this genre worth looking forward to:
THE OUTER WORLDS
Games from the developer Obsidian Games have always had two features - intriguing stories and a bunch of technical difficulties. This second feature has diminished over the years as the team moved on to the widely used drivers, and for their next project (using Unreal Engine 4) we have very high expectations. The Outer Worlds will be a RPG / Shooter with a science-fiction theme. In it we will fight against the corporate establishment that has dominated the colonized planets. We will play exclusively in solo mode, and our characters will develop flaws that will negatively affect one aspect of the game in the manner of the older Fallout games, but also positively to another. Although the name of the game mentions the worlds, we will only visit two planets and this will not be a game with a big open world, but that in this case could be a good thing.
Why pay attention to this game?
- Fallout creators have a true sense of humor
- The adventure will not be stretched for 100+ hours but will last as long as necessary
Release date: 2019.
ANTHEM
Here's Anthem, the new product of Canadian BioWare has a little RPG, a little shooter genre in it. In the main headquarters we will talk to the characters and make important decisions for the plot, while outside of this fortress we will battle some kind of monsters and fly in a beautiful environment in search of the best equipment possible. Comparisons with Destiny are inevitable because this is primarily a game designed to co-operate with focus on the loot. However, we always appreciate every attempt to materialize new worlds so we are curious as to what Anthem will bring us early this year, but also during it if it develops after the release.
Why pay attention to this game?
- We'll fly like Iron Man
- may offer a solid ratio of solo and cooperative gameplay
Release date: February 22, 2019
WASTELAND 3
Wasteland 2 has successfully revived the spirit of the classic Fallout five years ago, and the development team inXile Entertainment, with the third installment, intends to expand its tactical RPG. The gameplay moves into Colorado, where it will be our task to set up our base. We will be able to do it ourselves or with the help of other players in co-op, and on missions we will be traveling with vehicles from our base. In addition, the game will have a new dialogue system, a more fluid action and a greater environmental impact on the battle itself. InXile is now part of Microsoft's family, so we hope it will help them deliver the best quality game. Maybe even on the Xbox Game Pass.
Why pay attention to the game?
- will have a multiplayer modeled on Divinity: Original Sin 2
Release date: 2019.
TOWN
The creators of Pokemon games, by the end of the year, should launch a full-blooded Pokemon RPG for the Switch console, but before that, they have something completely new planned. The game Town will put us in a village that we will have to defend from the invasion of monsters. Battles will be turn-based, and instead of Pokemon we will have the inhabitants of the city.
Why pay attention to this game?
- It's a rare example that there is a new IP in Nintendo's production
